The incident between Brooks and Sumner happened during a two day-speech delivered by the latter against slavery. It was in 1856 that a senator from South Carolina named Preston Brooks attacked Massachussetts congressman known as Charles Sumner. The attacked was provoked by the anti-slavery speech delivered by the Congressman that angered Brooks. While Nixon was president, a recording device was installed in his office to record phone and in-person conversations. When being accused of having ties to the Watergate break-in, the Supreme Court ruled that Nixon must release his taped conversations. These conversations had incriminating evidence and showed Nixon's true intent as president. Ultimately, the evidence discovered by these recorded conversations lead to Nixon's resignation.
