The correct answer is A) Causes of the Civil War

- The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a bill that created the states of Kansas and Nebraska. This Act was one of the reasons that caused the Civil War because the Act allowed each territory to decide if they wanted slavery or not.

- Dred Scott decision was a decision taken by the U.S Supreme Court in the case Dred Scott v. John F.A. Sandford. The Supreme Court decided that Dred Scott was a slave even though he resided in a free state and free territory. This one of the causes of the Civil War because free states did not agree with the decision and slavery states started to “hunt” slaves in free territory.

- John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry was a revolt led by John Brown. He initiated a slave revolt by taking over the US arsenal at Harpers Gerry - VI. This caused an outrage in Southerners.

- The 1860 presidential election and South Carolina secession were breaking points to the Civil War. The Election of 1860 brought all conflicts listed here. The Democratic Party was divided into three groups, each of them with different ideas of how to deal with slavery. Lincoln was elected but South Carolina decided to respond to his election by seceding in Dec. 20th of 1860.

Which option best completes the diagram
skad [1K]

The correct answer is D) Applies to federal government .

The 5th amendment gives American citizens important protections. This includes the right of an individual to protect themself from self incrimination, prevention of being tried for the exact same crime twice (aka double jeopardy), and the right to know what you are being charged with (also known as Miranda rights). This amendment was intended to protect citizens from the federal government and was also aimed at limiting the power of the federal government in general.

According to Wheeler, what role did the sinking of the Maine play in causing the war ?
lubasha [3.4K]

In General Wheelers own words, "this terrible catastrophe [sinking of the Maine] though not the cause of the outbreak of hostilities, certainly hastened the action of Congress in its declaration of war against Spain." According to Wheeler the Spains actions in Cuba were already leading to war between Spain and the US. The sinking of the Maine was the final straw that decided the congress to vote for war. But war would have come without the sinking of the Maine.
