The goal of apartheid was to maintain white dominance and separate the local population to achieve this. With the enactment of apartheid laws in 1948, racial discrimination was institutionalized. These laws affected every aspect of social life, including the prohibition of marriage between whites and nonwhites. In 1950, the Population Registration Act required that all South Africans be classified into three categories: white, black and colored. The latter consisted of the larger subgroups such as Indians and other Asians.
