Which monsoon would a trader rely on to sail from Africa to India ?

Geography

<span>Sometime before 100 B.C., Greek sailors coming from Egypt discovered a shortcut to India.  Much easier and more direct than the arduous overland route, or than hugging the deserted coastlines of Arabia and Persia for 5,000 miles, this route took only weeks to travel.  Sailing straight out into the open waters of the Arabian Sea during the late spring, ships were whisked by the monsoon winds on a steady northeast course, arriving on India’s west coast by mid-summer. It was a daring feat for those first sailors who attempted it.  In a time when ships rarely ventured out of sight of land, and open waters invited the prospect of drifting aimlessly at sea, it took an extraordinarily bold, unlucky, or stupid navigator to sail out into one of the largest bodies of water on the planet.  Fortunately for those first crews who made the attempt, they were saved by one of the great forces of nature: the monsoon.

How has the geography of Afghanistan made it difficult for invading armies to conquer?
katovenus [111]

Answer:

b. The terrain is mostly desert and mountains

Explanation:

Afghanistan is a country that has proved to be extremely difficult to invade, and that has been the case for thousands of years. There is one major reason for this, the geography of the country. The country is dominated by very high mountains that create rain shadow and and deserts. The mountains themselves are extremely difficult for passing through, and even if they are passed by an invading army, they will take their toll. Once the mountains are passed, an invading army would face desert, very dry climate, very few food sources and very little water, with temperatures varying from scorching hot in the summer, to freezing cold in the winter. So even if an army passes through both of these natural obstacles, when it comes to face the natives it will be too weak to invade.

Changes in ocean currents have caused what to occur to people who are living in the inland parts of North America?
Lana71 [14]

Currents involve movement of ocean water masses, driven either by wind or by differences in temperature, salinity and density. The most important from a human perspective are the wind-driven surface currents that move water in the uppermost layer of the ocean.

Currents affect humans in several primary ways. Currents help shape the climate in the areas where we live, create the right conditions to support abundant ocean life in the areas where we fish, and change weather patterns through periodic events like El Nino/La Nina.

Ocean currents also cause upwelling in many areas like off in the inland parts of North America, where surface currents taking water away from the shore cause nutrient-rich water to well up from the ocean deeps. The abundance of nutrients in these areas forms fertile ground for kelp beds and marine fisheries, which in turn furnish food for humans. Alterations in current patterns like the El Nino/La Nina cycle affect humans as well by causing changes in local weather patterns in the years when they occur.
