This refers to a speech given by Ralph Waldo Emerson in Boston on November 18, 1859, where he praises abolitionist John Brown for his ideals and his actions. John Brown had been sentenced by hanging for his involvement in the raid on Harpers Ferry on October 16.

Emerson and other supporters such as Henry David Thoreau and Amos Bronson Alcott were raising money for the support of Brown's family. In this speech, Emerson makes it clear that he admires Brown's actions. He also devotes a lot of time to describing Brown's family in order to convince the audience that this man was not so different from them after all.
