Climate and the enviorment has always effected the way people live. Notice how there are quite a few settlement near the coast. The ocean was a source of food(fish) and also for trade and transport.  The settlement tend to be near or on the coast because of this. Also there are not that many settlements in the hotter regions, and the ones that are sit not that far from water
