Here is My essay comparing Sparta and Athens

I wrote about this because They are super cool city-states to research about, and it's fun to learn about how they lived.

Sparta and Athens were both Greek city-states, yet they were very different. Athenians valued art, beauty, reasons, and logic, while Spartans lived a life of simplicity. Sparta was isolated on a plane between the mountains. They did not welcome visitors, and didn’t trade.  They were focused on war. Athenians, on the other hand were very open. Since the soil near Athens was not great for farming, they had to trade to fill their needs. Trading opened Athens up to a lot of new ideas from around the world.

Sparta was a society dedicated to war. At the age of 7, Spartan boys went to live in military barracks to be trained as soldiers. While the women, stayed home and took care of everything. Women had a lot of freedom in Sparta. They could own property’s and they can choose who they want to marry.

In Athens women had very little rights and freedom. They could not own property, banned from reading, and they had no choice in marriage. Athenian boys learned how to read, write, play music, they learned math, and fitness. Athenian girls stayed home and were taught how to run a household from their mothers.

Sparta and Athens were both military strong but in different ways. Sparta’s military was composed of powerful, well-trained men. The Athenian army was almost as large as the Spartan, but the Athenian navy was way more advanced and they dominated the Mediterranean Sea.

In both Athens and Sparta, you had to be a male citizen to participate in government. A Democracy developed in Athens, and Oligarchy in Sparta. Oligarchy consisted of 2 kings and 28 men. They were called council of elders, and had to be at least 60 years old.

Both city-states had huge slave populations, with each home to about 100,000 slaves. Slaves were at the bottom of the social order in both states, while military men were at the top.

As we can conclude, even though Athens and Sparta were both Greek city-states, they were completely different. Sparta was focused on war and living a simple life, while Athens valued people, and were very open.

Eddsworld is an animated series on Youtube that was started by Edd Gould and his friends Thomas, Matthew, and Tord. The four go on silly adventures (and most of it Tord wasn't there). The characters all wear their favorite color hoodies. Green, blue, purple, and red.
Green- Edd is pretty much the leader. He's carefree and full of puns. No one can live one day with him with hearing a pun from him. He has brown hair, khakis, and green shoes. His true love is Coca-Cola. He would die for a can of it. He enjoys to sit back and draw with the TV in the background, with Tom.
Blue- Tom is a sarcastic guy who is the second smartest of the group. He can't live a day without his flask, which always is full of Smirnoff. He has light brown, spiky hair and empty eye sockets(he lost his eyes to lasers). He has dark grey pants and ska shoes. He has a bass guitar which he loves deeply. He enjoys making fun of Matt.
Purple- Matt is a narcissistic guy with only one thing on his mind. Himself. He's not very smart. He can be found taking pictures of himself with a glass full of milk(and a curly straw). He has blonde, also spiky hair, and a green overcoat. He also has blue jeans and black shoes. He loves all his pictures and can't go a day without complimenting himself. He sits next to Tord on the couch.
Red- Tord is a trigger happy guy. He always has a gun with him and loves action. He is the smartest of the group. He can be found punching Tom. He has slightly darker brown hair than Tom and two spikes in his hair, like big devil horns. He has black jeans and black shoes. He loves bacon and is said to keep a huge room of hidden bacon somewhere in Norway

What did the greeks think for a ideal hero
geniusboy [140]

According to Hesiod - the poet who, along with Homer, created the first guides to ancient Greek religion and customs - there were 5 ages of mankind. In the 4th of these ages, Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, created a race of men especially powerful and noble. They were mortals, but they were "god-like".

This Heroic Age, which spanned approximately 6 generations according to ancient genealogy,  was the time of legendary figures like Perseus, Heracles, Jason, Achilles, and Odysseus. All of the greatest heroes of ancient Greece lived during this 4th Age. It was a time of great adventure but also turmoil and bloodshed. Most of its heroes died in battle. The Greeks who recounted these legends centuries later believed they were living in a far less glorious 5th Age of mankind.

Was any of this heroic history based in reality? Historians of modern times were very skeptical until the shocking findings of German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in the 19th century. In his quest to show that the events of Homer's epic poems were rooted in historical events, Schliemann unearthed a goldmine of Bronze Age artifacts and structures at multiple sites (including what is now widely believed to be the site of Homer's Troy).

The excavations carried out by Schliemann and later archaeologists have revealed that this Late Bronze Age civilization, which we call Mycenaean, was the first advanced civilization in Greece (and one of the most advanced in all of Bronze Age Europe). The Mycenaeans built lavish palaces, as well as bridges, roads, and aqueducts. They also provide us with the first evidence of written language in Greece (called Linear B). Many of the religious figures and customs referenced in Homer can be traced back to the Mycenaean period.

But Mycenaean civilization essentially vanished from the historical record around 1100 BCE. Many of their palaces and city centers were either destroyed or abandoned, leaving no clear accounts of what happened. Modern archaeologists are torn on the subject; some believe outsiders invaded their cities, while others claim internal conflict caused the civilization's demise. Regardless, the grand culture of the Mycenaeans was no more.

The 300 years or so that followed the collapse of Mycenaean civilization is known as the "Greek Dark Age". Those who remained had a new lifestyle, characterized by a general decline in sophistication. They no longer used a writing system, nor lived in large settlements with elaborate infrastructure.

But even though the splendor of Mycenaean times may have been beyond their reach, it was not forgotten. Memories of those more prosperous times, along with remnants of Mycenaean religious beliefs and customs, continued to be passed from one generation to the next.

Around the 8th century BCE, Greek civilization reemerged. They began using a new alphabet adapted from the Phoenicians. Society and life became centralized once again, but this time around the polis, rather than the palace citadels of the Mycenaeans. The first Olympics took place in 776 BCE and the works of Homer and Hesiod were composed. Greece was well on its way to another golden age.

When one understands this historical progression, the role of the ancient Greek heroes becomes clearer. Greeks of the Dark Age could not help but idealize their past, which truly was exceptional in many ways. The impressive ruins and relics of the Mycenaeans were all around them, which only reinforced the power of these legends. Homer, Hesiod, and other epic poets ultimately consolidated the stories which had been passed down and made them their own.
