It's hard to read your picture

But if your equation is
(-3)^2 + (-2)^3

then its:

-3*-3 + -2*-2*-2 = -9 - 8 = -17

Since the -3 is in a parenthesis the answer to (-3)^2 is 9 so..

(-3)^2+(-2)^3

-3*-3 + -2*-2*-2=9-8=1
