During the age of imperialism, western powers used firearms such as the smoothbore and the muzzle-loading muskets. Then new firearms were invented, such as the machine guns and the Maxim gun. They also had gunboat with steam power equipped with powerful guns, canals made traveling faster, railroad helped them transport goods faster, and telegraph made transmission of message across the ocean faster. Hope this helps!!
