The puritans controlled everything similarly to how pope often controlled Europeans. Since everyone was puritan, almost, and everyone went to church, they would have to listen to what the priests were saying and they would have to listen to stories about burning in hell and what not, so naturally they would take these Puritan "truths" and apply them to their lives, which included politics and similar things.
