During dormancy a seed respire up to a limited extent in order to fulfill the need for food or nutrient.

Explanation:

During the dormant seed stage, a plant seed modifies itself to respire in a restricted way so that it can maintain adequate supply of food or nutrient with in the endosperm (a layer which covers the seed).

It is the endosperm which carries out all specific functions related to cellular respiration during the dormancy period.
