The first representative government in North America located in Virginia was the House of Burgesses, where George Washington served for 15 years before the American Revolution. In 1775, the final Revolutionary convention decided to establish the House of Delegates as a the lower house of the General Assembly.

The end of the House of Burgesses signaled the end of British rule in the state of Virginia.
