In The Crucible (play by Arthur Miller, written in 1952) Reverend Parris represents the common archetype of the greedy, despicable man. Parris's repeated demonstrations of  selfish behavior along the book, demonstrate that this town preacher thirsts for power, land, and material possessions even though he believes himself to be a pious man.
