A) a general dictionary

The word novice in this particular instance is a general term, which means it is not specialized such as being a medical term nor is it an idiom/figure of speech.  It should be noted, however, that sometimes specialized terms and idioms can be defined within a general dictionary, but within a specialized dictionary, the definitions will be quite detailed in close accordance with the field within which the term happens to be a part.
