Answer:

I have the exact same assignment as you?! Anyway, the answers are...

1. How is the family’s dream house different from their real house on Mango Street? Cite evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The house is very different than what they imagined. The house is small and run-down looking. It only has one bathroom, and everyone has to share rooms. The parents want more for their family, but Esperanza does not believe that they will ever have a better home.

2. How does Esperanza’s encounter with the nun affect her? Explain how she feels after this brief encounter. Cite evidence from the text.

Esperanza’s shame is self-imposed. People do not try to make her feel bad. Even with the nun, Esperanza must overcome society’s obstacles and also her own feelings of shame.

3. Why do you think Esperanza identifies with the four skinny trees outside her window? What does this tell you about her? Cite evidence from the text.

Esperanza identifies with them because she sees herself out of place, to a large extent, on Mango Street. In identifying with the trees, Esperanza is seeking to explain her own state of being in the world.

I don't have the answer to the number four, but I am surprised you need help. It's literally vocabulary. Also, do your work.

Do you think the townspeople in "a rose for emily" bear any responsibility for what becomes of emily?
almond37 [142]

I think that townspeople feel responsible for what becomes of Emily. The reason is that though they  disapprove most of Emily’s actions, such as refusing to pay her taxes and purchasing poison, nobody stops her. As Emilily is an inaccesible woman it is really difficult for the townspeople to take care of her and they leave her alone, on her own way, without any help.
