This is one of those issues that shows how important continued historical research is for a better understanding of American democracy.

If you asked a historian 50 years ago, they would have said that the colonists knew nothing about the Iroquois system.

New historical understandings show that the colonists did have an understanding of the Iroquois system and that it may have influenced. The extent to which it influenced remains quite a debate.

Either way, the Iroquois democratic system may be the oldest remaining democratic system in existence in the world today.
