Abraham Lincoln was the Republican candidate. The Democratic Party went to elections divided. There were two Democratic candidates, senator Stephen Douglas, supported by the Democratic Party, and John Breckinridge. The latter was the candidate of the Southern Democrats. Northern democrats opposed slavery and the Southern members of the party supported it. As it usually happens in politics and war, divisions weaken a cause or an army. So, these Democratic internal differences cost them dearly and helped Lincoln win the presidency in 1860.
