The essence of the disagreement between these two superpowers was one of who had the hegemony over Europe and it was a fight between the Western countries with capitalist economies like West Germany, France, Spain, the Scandinavian countries and the sphere of the Soviet Union of the Eastern European countries like Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland etc US troops were stationed in places like West Germany to assert this fight for hegemony.
