His phantasmagorical presence is symbolic as it implies the invisibility of black slaves in southern society. However, it is during the raft chapters that Jim becomes more real eventually, as a real person, expressing his own views and making Huck see how humiliating his joke on him was. At the end, Jim is again made invisible by Tom when he suffers Tom’s callous evasion game but finally becomes visible when his heroic attitude towards Tom reveal him as a decent human being.
