What the Red Shirts and the Ku Klux Klan had in common was that they were both white supremacist <em>(often terrorist)</em> groups that advocated racism to the extreme. They were only better organized than the Ku Klux Klan and other "vigilante" groups. They used organization, intimidation and violence to achieve their goals and they supported Democrats. One of the most visible Redshirt goals was to prevent freedmen (<em>former slaves</em>, both women and men) from voting and exercising their civil rights.
