Although Wilson himself was not on the ballot anywhere, he did succeed in making the American people think that the big issue in both the presidential and congressional contests was American commitment to the League of Nations. Result? The American people said no to the league—electing a conservative Republican, Warren G. Harding rather than the progressive Democratic nominee, Cox. It wasn’t even close—Harding won by the largest margin of any candidate in American history. Progressiveness was dead—at least for the moment.
