The Citizenship clause is included in the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, that was enacted in 1868, during the Reconstruction era.  It states that everybdy who is born or naturalized in the US, is a citizen of the United States and of the state where that person resides.

This clause overturned the former US Supreme Court decision, adopted to solve the Dred Scott v. Sandford case,  which determined that African Americans and former slaves could not acquire the US citizenship nor enjoy the rights and immunities connected to it.
