As a theorist, Machiavelli was a major figure in the reality of political theory, he was highly respected in Europe during the Renaissance.
Two of his famous books, Discorsi sopra la prima deca di Tito Livio (Discourse on Livio) and Il Principe (The Prince), originally written as a hope to improve the conditions of government in Northern Italy, later became a common book on politics at that time. Written in 1513, The Prince systematically explains how a person can gain power, maintain it, and use political power properly.
