Jefferson had confidence in to authorize trade withal Native American people in the West and to assest a water route to the Pacific. Jefferson as well was mesmerized by the promise of what could be educated about the geography from the west, the lives and spoken languages of the Native Americans, Living organisms, ground (soil), rock, climate, and how it was different from the east.
