First generation are the ones born in a foreign nation and then moved to the USA. They often do not speak English or if they do, speak it poorly. Second generation are the children of the first generation, born in the USA and are citizens. They speak English and often the language of their parents. Therefore the conjugations for étudier are:

Tu étudies
