I’m not sure what you discussed but i would say the fourth option
“they’re better than no transitions, but you strive for much better ones” because they are transitions and they are acceptable but certainly not perfect considering there are far better ones you can use

The ocean is the biggest adversary to the men in the boat. They are trying to survive the ocean's constant attempts to sink them and pull them away from land.
