The French had excepted to control the negotiation. France lost all of its territory in North America to the Spanish and English/Americans. France only kept a few islands in the Caribbean. The indoor electric lap which was invented during the second industrial revolution (which you've mentioned) enabled people to be awake much longer at a good light source, they were able to read, to communicate or to do anything they desired.
