The person who investigated and reported John D. Rockefeller's corrupt business practices at Standard Oil was Ida Tarbell.

Ida Minerva Tarbell was an American professor, writer and journalist, considered one of the main "muckrakers" of the Progressive Era of the late 19th and early 20th century and a pioneer of investigative journalism.

She is known for her research on John D. Rockefeller and the Standard Oil Company, published in series by McClure's Magazine from 1902 to 1904; his investigations exposed the unfair monopolistic practices practiced by the company until the Supreme Court of the United States decided to dissolve the monopoly.

His 19 journalistic articles were compiled in a book she published in 1904 under the name of The History of the Standard Oil Company. In 1999, the University of New York cataloged her research as number 5 in a list of the 100 best works of American journalism of the 20th century.

Who is Richard Wright talking about when he refers to “the lord of the land?”
nirvana33 [79]

The correct answer is the following.

When Richard Wright is talking about the “Lord of the Land” he is refefring to the owner of the fields where he used to work for. He refers that way he is leaving the place and he is heading North, to Chicago.

He literally describes it like this: “We take one last furtive look over our shoulders to the Big House high upon a hill beyond the railroad tracks- where the Lord of the Land, and we feel glad for we are living.”

Richard Wright wrote “The One-Room Kitchenette”. In the story, he describes the moments when he left the South where he used to live and work, in order to go North, looking for better opportunities. In a bitter-sweet manner, Wright he refers to what that meant to him and his family to leave that place and then arrive in Chicago where they lived in a one-room place in a tenement in Chicago.
