The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal and are entitled to "life, liberty<span>, and the pursuit of </span>happiness<span>." These ideas would be expressed again in the new republic's Constitution. These ideas form the basis of our beliefs about the role of our government in our lives today.</span>

To state why America wanted to separate from Britain by listing their grievances and everything they did to try and salvage their relationship with Great Britain. (Example: Before the D<span>eclaration of Independence, they protested peacefully and made petitions to try and get the king to listen to them, but they failed.)

Not only that, they stated why the world should consider them their own country and also put down their beliefs in the D</span><span>eclaration of Independence. They said that they had "certain unalienable [basically irrefutable] rights that the government cannot take away. These rights are liberty, life, and the pursuit of happiness."</span>
