Ambrose Bierce was a journalist. Many of his newspapercolumns focused on corruption, fraud, and people Bierce didn’t like. Bierc

e had a biting wit, so people did not want to find themselves the subject of one of his columns. However, he also had a very serious side to his writing. In face, Bierce was disappointed with the war reporting of his day, so he basically said, “I will do it myself !” At the age of 71, he rode alongside Pancho Villa’s army as it waged revolution across Mexico.

During Shakeaspeare time, people actually believed in witches and demons. They were extremely superstitious, and mystical/supernatural beliefs affected their everyday lives. If someone was ill, it was not uncommon to believe that person was cursed, for example. So seeing the supernatural being represented on a stage was especially frightening, which is also why magic and the supernatural are a recurring theme in Shakespeare plays.
