At the time Anna Cooper wrote that essay, women were not encouraged to pursue a university career, just to be good mothers and housewives. Even at that time, Anna was a feminist, always struggling and voicing for those women who couldn't have equal opportunities.

Now, more than a century later, there are still men that prefer wives to be at home, but they are scarce. Women study at university, and they have the ability to perform tasks as equally as men do. In the late 1960s, the Women`s Liberation movement started questioning patriarchy, social and sexual hierarchies and the dynamic of women in an organised society. The cost of living is also higher, so most of the times, two incomes are needed for a family. Behind is the time when women stay at home, caring for the kids and having the food ready for the husband.  Nowadays, chores and responsibilites are shared equally.

Read the excerpt adapted from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce: The wide playgrounds were swarming with boys
frutty [35]

Answer:

D. Gloomy.

Explanation:

James Joyce's "Portrait Of An Artist As A Young Man" follows the life of the protagonist Stephen Dedalus, focusing on his intellectual and religious awakening. At the same time, it also deals with the themes of betrayal, alienation, and finding his identity on his way to becoming the famous person he will be.

As seen in the given passage from the text, we see a young Stephen among other boys on the playground. While the others were playing football, he remained on the sidelines, <em>"out of sight of his captain, out of the reach of the rude feet, pretending to run now and then"</em>. Added to that, the narrator states that the <em>"evening air was pale and chilly"</em>. Through these words, we can know that the <u>scene's mood is gloomy</u>, with no real sense of happiness or excitement in the young Stephen.
