In the short story 'Paul's Case: A Study in Temperament' by Willa Carthur, the reason Paul goes to work is that he has finally found a job and a life that he enjoys, and is keen to ensure he does not lose it. However, as we learn later in the story, he is not as happy as he seems at first.
