When the war was declared in 1917, the US military troops were not prepared properly. Since American soldiers were large in number they had no place to get trained in France. Soldiers were traveled on ships to France since there were no signs of air transportation. The ships would be very crowded and there won't be a place to move an inch even. They would be trained vigorously and won't be allowed to take rest. They could only see the sky once or twice a daily by coming over to the deck. In 1918, they went through trench warfare before seeing the combat in November. The trenches were 4 feet wide and eight feet deep and sometimes even shallower where they had to spend maximum time. Even they were inhaling poisonous gases due to which many were killed in those trenches.

Life for soldiers on the front during WWI was very hard. They had to spend a lot of time in narrow, uncomfortable and muddy trenches with toilets often overflowed. They eat food rations and were exposed to some diseases.
