We are shown a somber classroom filled with kids with their heads connected to a machine, doing what is expected of them: study. One child is looking out of the window to a brighter and more colorful way of living, dedicating her life to the Arts, but being scolded by a teacher because that doesn't suit the system's expectations.

The teacher suggesting the girl to study by saying "you don't want to be a child left behind, do you?" may refer to the pressure put amongst children to work hard in school and get the best grades possible for their schools to receive government funding, stated in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
In essence, the author is stating that the degree of diversity that exists in the United States is much greater than any other country in the world. Any time there is a lot of diversity, there is the potential for problems.
