This is a bit of an oversimplification. The United States entered WWI partly for moral reasons, but also because it was becoming clear that Europe was going to become absolutely devastated, which meant that the Americans would lose valuable trading partners.

If those civilians didnt die that would have ment the war would of had to carry on and millions of more people would have died. However, any other situation the killing of innocent people is horrible and should be punished by worse than death.
