The dispute assumes importance if we consider that the routes from Europe to the Far East would save 4,000 km through the passage, compared to the current routes passing through the Panama Canal.

(The US would not share that technology with the Soviets, who had been their ally in World War II.) When the Soviets developed their own atomic weaponry, this led to a massive arms race between the superpowers.
