The Northwest Passage is a sea route made up of a sequence of straits in North America, above the Arctic Circle, which allow the connection of the Davis Strait to the Bering Strait, that is, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

On this route, known since the first explorations of the Arctic, but subject to ice blocking, a territorial dispute is underway between Canada and the United States: the latter consider the Northwest Passage as international waters, while Canada considers them Canadian territorial waters. The dispute assumes importance if we consider that the routes from Europe to the Far East would save 4,000 km through the passage, compared to the current routes passing through the Panama Canal.
