The Unites States supported a UN resolution which called for Iraqi troops withdrawal from Kuwait since they were afraid of Saddam Hussein's influence if he possessed large amount of oil.

Hussein defied United Nations Security Council demands to withdraw from Kuwait by mid-January 1991. What's more, the Persian Gulf War kicked off a massive air offensive led by the United States called Operation Desert Storm.
