Huang He is also known as the river of sorrows because of the devastating floods that often destroys the villages near it. The earliest civilization of China settled near the Huang He river for water source but because of its elevated river bed in its lower course, floods frequently wipe the villages. Political independence of the city-states was constantly protected by the aristocracy and so, any individual who would want to conquer the territory would succeed for only a short time and would never have the glory and respect of a real king.
