The problems with Hawaii's food supply mainly have to do with 90% of the food being imported. Should something happen to the boats, a lot of islanders would not have a way to get food and Hawaii could crumble in just 10 days.This being said, some people have found ways to get their own food should the boats not show up one day. They've learned how to spear and catch fish in order to have a good protein resource, and many villagers grow their own plants.
