No, no comenzó en todo el mundo. Comenzó cuando los Sumerios se asentaron por primera vez en medio de los Ríos Tigris y Éufrates, en la región del Medio Este, en donde ahora es Irak.

Ahí aprovecharon las inundaciones de los ríos para que la tierra fértil produjera abundantes cosechas. A partir de ahí, construyeron impresionantes ciudades-estado como Lagash, Nippur, Eridu, Ur, y Uruk.
