In doing so, they pass on these traits to the next generation. Over time, this process allows organisms to adapt to their environment. Evolution is the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth. With Darwin's discovery of natural selection, the origin and adaptations of organisms were brought into the realm of science. Darwin failed to understand the significance of these results because he had no model of particulate inheritance that could be applied to genetic data.
