ser / ocho y media / noche

Answer: Eran las ocho y media de la noche.  (imperfect)

It was half past eight in the evening.

-

Eva / leer en el sofá / cuando / el teléfono / sonar (ring)

Answer: Eva estaba leyendo en el sofá cuando sonó el teléfono.  (imperfect, preterite)

Eva was reading on the couch when the phone rang.

Explanation: In this case the phone interrupted the action of reading what was happening. So the verb that interrupted the action must be conjugated in the preterite (sonó) and the one that was happening must be conjugated in the imperfect (estaba leyendo).

-

(ella) levantarse / y contestar / el teléfono

Answer: Ella se levantó y contestó el teléfono.  (preterite, preterite)

She got up and answered the phone.

Explanation: In this case the actions happened only once, so we use the preterite, in addition, since the verb is conjugated the <u>pronoun</u> is placed before the verb (<u>se</u> levantó).

-

(ella) oír / la voz / de su mejor amiga

Answer: Ella oyó la voz de su mejor amiga. (preterite)

She heard the voice of her best friend.

Explanation: the action happened only once, so we must use the preterite.

-

la amiga / estar / en el bar de la esquina (corner) / y querer hablarle

Answer: La amiga estaba en el bar de la esquina y quería hablarle.  (imperfect, imperfect)

The friend was at the bar on the corner and she wanted to talk to her.

Explanation: In this case we are providing background information, so we use the imperfect.

Question 6 with 1 blankyo / caminar / mi ciudad / el parque / por / (fascinar) Question 7 with 1 blankmis amigos / ir / yo / el
laiz [17]

Answer:

6. A mí me fascina caminar por el parque de mi ciudad

7. A mis amigos y a mí nos encanta el parque de diversiones

8. A mí me aburren mucho las películas románticas

9.  A mí me interesa asistir a conciertos de música clásica

10.  A mí me hace falta más tiempo libre.

Explanation:

In Spanish, as in all languages, we have different syntactical structures that are considered grammatical, the most common is S+V+O, which means Subject + Verb + Object. Remember that it is necessary to have a conjugated verb to make a sentence. For example: “Yo compré pan” (I bought bread); here our subject is the pronoun YO, the verb is the past form of COMPRAR” and the object is PAN.

In Spanish there are <u>two main things that we have to remember at the moment of write sentences</u>:

1. GENRE AND NUMBER: They have to coincide in all the words that accept them (Articles, nouns, adjectives and verbs). Thus, if we have a SINGULAR FEMININE NOUN, then the article and the adjective have to be SINGULAR and FEMININE; the verb only will match in number because verbs don’t codify genre.

2. OMISSION OF COMPONENTS: To have a complete sentence we only need a conjugated verb; we, of course, can have the subject, object and all the modifiers that we can find within the sentence, but they can be omitted too without any problem.

Now that we have remembered some things about making new sentences in Spanish we can proceed to answer our exercise. Please focus on the conjugation of each verb and how it matches with the noun and the object.

<h2>6. A mí me fascina caminar por el parque de mi ciudad</h2><h2>7. A mis amigos y a mí nos encanta el parque de diversiones</h2><h2>8. A mí me aburren mucho las películas románticas</h2><h2>9.  A mí me interesa asistir a conciertos de música clásica</h2><h2>10.  A mí me hace falta más tiempo libre. </h2>
