Slaves were originally brought into the southern part of Carolina to be used in cotton plantations.

The development of cotton and sugar crops in the Deep South in the early eighteenth century also led to the creation of large plantations that had hundreds of slaves. Despite that, the vast majority of farmers in the South did not own slaves or own fewer than five slaves, as slaves were much more expensive than those on earth. But as there were some farmers that had a huge amount of slaves, black population increased enormously in the South.
