Being African American during the Jim Crow era is very hard because you will be treated with discrimination, assault and abuse daily. African American people we're being treated unfairly no matter where they go (work, school, restaurants, local park, etc..) There are establishments like restaurants, hotels and shops that refused to serve black people and dragged them away, publicly humiliating them for being black.

Cultural protest causes changes in the "status quo" for African American because they gained more rights as citizens under the United States. Racist signs and discrimination lessens (unfortunately, it didn't totally disappeared) and they we're now under protection by the law.
