Bonjour

Do we need to use partitive articles in every sentence in French ????

<em>The answer is </em>NO !!!

You must use partitive articles with things as food, that can't be quantified

<em>examples =</em>

<em>de l'eau = some water</em>

<em>du gâteau = some cake</em>

<em>du vin =some wine </em>

<em />

Je veux de l'eau = I want <u>some</u> water.

<em>BUT </em>Je veux un verre d'eau.

Veux-tu du vin ?. = Do you want <u>any </u>wine ?

<em>BUT </em>Veux-tu une bouteille de vin .

-

It's used as well after the verb "FAIRE"

je fais du foot = I play football

je fais de la guitare = I play the guitar

-

other uses but these are the main ones

....

du = + masc. noun

de la = + fem noun

de l' = in front of a noun begining with a vowel <em>(elision)</em>

des = + plural nouns both fem. & masc.

de/ d' = in a negative sentence

-

<em>examples</em>

je bois du vin. Je ne bois pas de vin.

Est-ce que tu veux des pâtes? Je ne veux pas de pâtes ?

Je veux de l'eau. Je ne veux pas d'eau.

Hpe it helps ☺☺☺

Hi !

Question

<em>In French, do we need to use partitives articles in every sentence?</em>

No

The French partitive articles express a notion of quantity: a vague one, a non-specific one.

-du (+ masculine word)

-de la (+ feminine word),

-de l’ (followed by a vowel),

-des (+ plural word).

Je mange du pain.

Je mange de la viande.

Je mange des fruits.

Je bois de l'eau.

J'achète du riz.

Un verre de vin (a glass of wine)

Une bouteille de champagne (a bottle of champagne)

Une carafe d’eau (a pitcher of water – de becomes d’ + vowel)

Un litre de jus de pomme (a liter of apple juice)

Un kilo de pommes de terre (a kilo of potatoes)

Une part de tarte (a slice of pie).

These articles are often used after the verbs <em>vouloir </em>or <em>avoir</em> and with food.

<em>Exemples : "avoir"</em>

J'ai des animaux.

I've got (some) animals.

Je n'ai pas d'animaux.

Me, I don't have any animals.

<em>Exemples : "vouloir"</em>

Je voudrais de l’eau, s’il vous plait. (some water, maybe a glass, or maybe a bottle…)

Salut !

Determining the gender of "un professeur," for instance, requires the knowledge of whether the teacher is a man or a woman.

- true

Un professeur = masculin

Some  words are always masculine or feminine, despite the gender of the person referred to. Don't be tempted to select the article you use based on the gender of the person about whom you are speaking.
