-on the one hand, he wanted to establish a colony to be a safe place for English debtors who were imprisoned in their country just because of their debts. He sought the newly formed colony as a safe heaven where this people would be able to start new lives, away from those economic problems.

-on the other hand, the colony would act as a buffer zone between the Spanish territories in Florida and the English colonies further north. In other words, the colony of Georgia would serve to protect the British colonies in North America from Spanish attacks coming from the south.
