The smooth muscle cells and elastic fibers that make up the walls help make Arteries tough and FLEXIBLE. This enables Arteries to withstand the high pressure of BLOOD as it is pumped from the Heart. The force that BLOOD exerts on the walls of Blood Vessels is known as BLOOD PRESSURE.
