I am sure it is the last statement where Brutus and Cassius are the antagonists. Only because Caesar isn't a traditional antagonist or protagonist.

Answer:

Brutus is considered both the protagonist and the antagonist because he kills Caesar, a tyrannical leader, to save Rome, but also because he murders Rome’s leader.

Explanation:

Though the title of William Shakespeare's play is "Julius Caesar", the main story does not revolve around the character of Caesar. It revolves more around Brutus, who is the friend of Caesar.

The play deals with the conflicts and inner thoughts of Brutus, his loyalty to the king and the nation. Though he loves Caesar, he also thinks that the new power of being a ruler will make Caesar more vain and may end in him misusing his power. This could lead to a bad future for the nation, which he loves and had sworn to save from any problems. So, in his decision to uphold the future safety of the nation of Rome, he helps in the murdering of Caesar. He is both the protagonist and antagonist for he kills Caesar who he thinks will become a tyrannical leader. But he also did this not out of personal jealousy but rather for the safety of Rome. But in doing so, he brings about the death of it's leader.

It's the last one because in Rainsfords mind the general is the lowest of low and making a deal with him would be like making a deal with the devil himself. Rainsford is a man in what we would call a Hero's Journey. Rainsford portrays the characteristics of someone who is pure hearted and courageous meaning no matter what the general says hes fighting his way out of this and making sure no one is hunted on that island again.
