When you begin to write a persuasive essay, you take a position on a topic. You choose a thesis and think about evidence to back up your position. To prepare for a counterargument, you will consider possible arguments against your thesis or some aspect of your reasoning. This is a good thing to do. Before you start writing your essay, you need to anticipate who will disagree with your thesis and why.

1. A counter-argument makes an argument stronger; if it's done well.
2. It gives the writer a chance to respond to the reader's objections.
3. It shows the writer as a logical person who has thought about both sides of the argument.
