om the story. Here's your discussion prompt:
When Conrad uses the phrase "the noble cause" to describe colonialism, he is being sarcastic.

"No doubt he was; but he had been a couple of years already out there engaged in the noble cause, you know, and he probably felt the need at last of asserting his self-respect in some way."

Answer: I agree.

Explanation:

In the sentence when he says ''you know'' we are getting the feeling of sarcasm by him. Since the colonialism is about authority and dominance over the people or locations, it cannot be noble.

It is referring to the interests of one or more person and it is not a benign thing.

Although it is about ''self-respect in some way'' the dominance over someone isn't justified and people are aware of it, that is why I think that he was sarcastic.

How does popular opinion shape political policies? Mccarthyism
devlian [24]

Answer:

Political policies are indirectly a product of the public opinion. Any democracy elects the nominees as a representative who would cater to their needs and who work for a better and more developed society and living conditions. The political parties are there to formulate and execute public policies that would govern the people and the country itself. The public opinion is the one ingredient that is crucial to shape these policies. For instance, an educational policy will highly depend on the present need and the condition of the education system, the analysis of which would be closer to the reality only if based on public opinion. And hence political policies are shaped by popular opinions.
